They can also use the service to transport their crops or buy fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the best thing about it is the business was built by three young women still in school<\/strong>, after a professor told them about a mobile-app competition. They entered and won, receiving \u20ac10,000 to develop their application.They next created a company that was quickly selected by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mlab.co.ke\/pages\/home.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">m:lab<\/a>, a Kenyan incubator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe application relies on three features,\u201d co-founder and head of marketing, Linda Kwamboka, 23, explains. \u201cThe starting point was the price-enquiry module: the farmer sends an SMS to the code 3535, noting the product and the location they\u2019re interested in, and in less than 10 seconds the service sends them the price, which lets them decide where to sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, sending an SMS saying \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/urbanchoreography.net\/2011\/05\/10\/kenyan-farmers-use-sms-to-beat-climate-driven-price-uncertainty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">price, cabbage, Embu<\/a>\u201d will return the average price on a 126kg bag of cabbage in the city of Embu. But by typing \u201cprice, cabbage, Nairobi,\u201d a farmer finds out that they could sell the same bag for five times the price in the capitol. It\u2019s up to the farmers whether the difference in transport costs make the trip worth it.<\/p>\n<p>The two other functionalities allow farmers to buy and sell together via SMS.<\/p>\n<p>But companies in incubators like m:lab are trying to create businesses, and so there\u2019s the question of a business model. This is also simple. M-Farm charges 10 Kenyan shillings per SMS, about 10 cents. Kwamboka says that farmers have no problem paying this fee because it allows them to save thousands of shillings.<\/p>\n<p>A small detail I teased her about: since I didn\u2019t have any credit when we did the demonstration on her phone, Kwamboka had to go out and recharge her pre-paid card. An ever-present problem that mobile fans always forget to mention, and something I\u2019ll talk about again.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what, the service is interesting. In less than a year (the company started in November 2010), the regionally limited pilot project already has 2,000 users in its database. 400 farmers use the feature that lets them buy or sell together.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d imagine they don\u2019t stop here. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
