Rafea is the founder of<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bey2ollak.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bey2ollak.com<\/a>, an app that \u201clets people share traffic information for the primary streets in Cairo and Alexandria, (the country\u2019s second-largest city),\u201d he told me. Bey2ollak translates roughly to \u201cwhat people are saying,\u201d with the \u201c2\u2033 replacing an accent mark \u2013 the hazma \u2013 that doesn\u2019t exist on Latin keyboards.<\/p>\n<p>Initially launched for Blackberry and iPhone, then Android, the app is now available on the majority of Nokia phones, the primary phone used in Egypt. It has no GPS, no map. The user looks up the the name of a street or highway they want to take, and the app returns comments via text. Traffic conditions are classed in five categories based on how fluidly it is moving. The app can report what it sees. One-hundred thousand people use the service launched, as is proper for geeks, on 101010: October 10th of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Rafea, 23, holds a degree in computer science; he launched his company with four family members.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t really understand their choice to first launch on smartphones, in a country where the devices are still rare. The same for not using SMS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>His response<\/strong>: \u201cInnovation, for us, meant going for simplicity. Not many people know how to read maps, so we chose the simplest system possible. Egyptians are fine receiving SMS\u2019s, but sending them is not as easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t find this explanation very convincing after seeing people use SMS in Dakar, Accra and Nairobi (see my post on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/winch5-blog\/2011\/10\/mfarm-lets-kenyan-farmers-find-market-prices-sms\/\">Kenya\u2019s m-farm<\/a>, for example).<\/p>\n<p><strong>And this is how, forced to retreat, he told me that the key to his company is not crowdsourcing, not technology<\/strong>: \u201cThere\u2019s simplicity, sure, but the language is essential. We decided to launch in neither Arabic or English, choosing instead the language that young Arabs use on the internet, a language their\u00a0parents don\u2019t understand.\u201d This form of Arabic is written in Latin script, using numbers to fill in where letters don\u2019t exist; it has its own vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe secret,\u201d he adds, \u201cis slang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is obvious, my dear Francis, when dealing with social media!<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, 3ly (that\u2019s how he writes his name).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What lessons can we learn from this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Very nice but not totally convincing,\u00a0Aly Rafea told me a secret this morning, a secret that\u2019s worth gold. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
