And yet they might have gotten a pretty good idea of what was coming if they saw what happened in a summer camp for Arab children aged 12 to 15 in August 2010. They came to the camp, located in Isma\u00eflia, 150km from Cairo, to learn how to express themselves, and ended up taking over. Because of candy.<\/p>\n<p>These 70 kids from eight countries (Yemen, Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq) came in order to learn how to speak their mind in every possible medium \u2013 film, music, drawing, blogs, posters, to name a few. The camp expected poems, songs, or videos; but five days had barely passed before the kids were demanding sweets, which the organizers didn\u2019t provide. Or didn\u2019t allow (I forgot to ask).<\/p>\n<p>Getting no response, the kids decided to organize. The most active ones led a protest, mobilizing the other campers to the sound of a drum, occupying the radio and choosing a representative to negotiate with the organizers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2011\/10\/31\/ob_5ac9da_keyboard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"keyboard Egypt: When Revolution Comes from the Mouths of Babes\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2011\/10\/31\/ob_5ac9da_keyboard.jpg?resize=552%2C234\" title=\"keyboard\" width=\"552\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though we didn\u2019t show it, we were delighted,\u201d said Ranwa Yehia, director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/arabdigitalexpression.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArabDigitalExpression.com<\/a>. She was also surprised. Yehia has journalism in her blood: \u201cit\u2019s what I love, and what made me what I am today,\u201d she told me in her apartment, located in the Zamalek neighborhood in Cairo\u2019s center. \u201cBut I left in 2005 when I realized how bad traditional media is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yehia and her husband, Ali Shaath, a computer scientist, decided to devote themselves to Arabic children\u2019s digital expression.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2011\/10\/31\/ob_d6569e_logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" alt=\"logo Egypt: When Revolution Comes from the Mouths of Babes\" height=\"260\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2011\/10\/31\/ob_d6569e_logo.jpg?resize=298%2C260\" title=\"logo\" width=\"298\"><\/a>The first group of campers met in summer of 2007. In 2009, they protested \u2013 already, against the lack of candy and soda \u2013 but didn\u2019t take action. In 2010, on the other hand, they took control inside the camp. Even more astonishing is the fact that, when a group of \u201cveterans\u201d from the previous year\u2019s protest wanted to arbitrarily resurrect it, the majority didn\u2019t listen.\u201dThere\u2019s no consensus,\u201d they told them. \u201cMake pamphlets. Convince us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Very mature.<\/p>\n<p>They had actually posted their rules at their arrival:\u201dWe except nothing less than absolute freedom.\u201d In every case, Yehia said., \u201ctheir slogans are often inspired from whatever country they come from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The secret of this astounding success lies in part in three rules that Yehia and Shaath hold rigorously in place: the amount of boys and girls must be equal; social differences are reduced to a minimum (everyone wears the same shirt, at least at the beginning); and above all else, \u201cwhen they realize that we are treating them as equals it is amazingly empowering for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, the kids of 2010 even tweeted their revolt to the rest of the world \u2026 which didn\u2019t notice. But for Yehia and Shaath, there is no doubt: \u201cAfter January 25th (the date of the first major anti-Mubarak protests that led to his fall on February 11th), we understood \u2013 after the fact \u2013 that the 2010 revolt was a symbolic forerunner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2009, they demanded. In 2010, they took what they considered to be their right. They stopped believing that things change themselves. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
