\"KE<\/a>It all started as an ordinary rivalry, two young developers claiming at the same time to be the first game developer in Africa. No risk of it coming to blows with a continent separating them: one lives in Accra, Ghana, and the other in Nairobi, Kenya.<\/p>\n

Learning of their rivalry definitely piqued their interest, and they talked together about whether what counted was being the first to put a game on the market, or to be the first to build something from scratch, without using any mods or apps available on the web. This way, each cold hold the title \u2013 each has his version, so there\u2019s no need to chose.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I was alone. I was happy to find another African who was passionate about game development,\u201d Wesley Kirinya explained to me in Nairobi, where he lives. \u201cSo we started chatting from time to time.\u201d This was 2007.<\/p>\n

But Eyram Tawia, the Ghanian I met in Accra, had the chance to be chosen to attend a\u00a0school of technology<\/a>\u00a0and an incubator financed and organized by Meltwater.com, a Norwegian company located in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

After several months, the two realized they should unite their efforts. The two developers met in Accra and decided to start a business together,\u00a0LetiGames.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Their first product launched just before the African Cup of Nations.\u00a0StreetSoccerBattles.com<\/a>\u00a0lets you take on several people in street soccer. They have since released\u00a0iWarrior<\/a>\u00a0for the iPhone. \u201cWe wanted to show how safaris really work, how rural dwellers defend their crops and villages against animals,\u201d Eyram told me in Accra. \u201cOur designs are based on traditional, and very African, images.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"GH<\/a>The next step: educational games.<\/p>\n

Eyram\u2019s objective \u201cis not only to make games for Africans, but to make games in Africa that are able to compete on the global market.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than being a company, we are in the process of building an entire industry,\u201d Wesley, echoing Eyram, said in Nairobi.<\/p>\n

The big problem \u2013 which I found in many cases \u2013 is that there is no context, no ecosystem. Creators and entrepreneurs are legion. The reduction in prices and the multiplication of collective efforts, whether or not supported by foreign countries, lets them launch products. But, most often, they must create the ecosystem that any initiative like this needs in order to exist and prosper.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s sort of a wake-up call.<\/p>\n

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015.
