\"GH<\/a>Herman Chinery-Hesse was described to me as \u201cthe African Bill Gates,\u201d but what he\u2019s launching is more like the continent\u2019s eBay<\/strong>. He lacks the Microsoft founder\u2019s fortune and power, but he did launch a software company serving SME\u2019s in Ghana, where he lives, as well as other African countries, over twenty years ago.<\/p>\n

The comparison with Gates is misleading. Open and warm, Chinery-Hesse has a true vision of what he wants to do for his country and for his continent.<\/p>\n

It starts with\u00a0ShopAfrica53<\/a>, a sort of online mall that he recently launched. The goal is to \u201cact as the intermediary to small African companies,\u201d Chinery-Hesse told me in his veranda. It\u2019s his second giant adventure.<\/p>\n

SoftTribe<\/a>, which he founded after returning from the United States and Great Britain, provides software to companies in several African nations<\/strong>, and today generates \u201cmillions of dollars.\u201d But Chinery-Hesse hopes for better. He wants to contribute to the development of the continent, through entrepreneurship and innovation, which is the reason he decided to launch ShopAfrica53.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The commercial platform rests on three pillars:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. A website for each country, where merchants can offer, and clients find, products. All transactions are made via SMS.<\/li>\n
  2. A credit system\u00a0called the\u00a0African Liberty Card<\/a>, which is a scratch card provided by ShopAfrica53. Available in various retail locations, the cards allow customers to instantly transfer money to their phone.<\/li>\n
  3. The third is an example of Chinery-Hesse\u2019s shrewd market insight. All logistics are handled by couriers (DHL, FedEx and others). They know how to find a product in any area, no matter how rural, and deliver it to Saragossa, Toulouse or Miami. All ShopAfrica53 has to do is to pay providers at the end of the month. When asked about the cost of these operations, Chinery-Hesse responded with a smile: \u201cThe difference in salaries between Africa and Europe or the US gives us large margins to pull from.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cWe target the base of the pyramid, and our margins are significantly reduced,\u201d he said. \u201cSMS and email don\u2019t have borders.\u201d He recognizes that it will take a certain amount of time for his project to make it\u2019s mark, perhaps up to five years. \u201cBut it will be huge. It will be more effective than anything outside aid could do in five years. I don\u2019t know any country that developed thanks to aid. It\u2019s a false path. We will do it better; what\u2019s more, we\u2019ll do it with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Going back to my notes for this post (this is part of a\u00a0long article published in Spanish this week in Madrid\u2019s El Pa\u00eds<\/a>[Article in Spanish<\/strong>]), I wondered if it was really \u201cthe base of the pyramid\u201d \u2013 a very popular term right now \u2013 that he was aiming for. I tend to think that a more intelligent strategy is to aim for the middle of the pyramid \u2013 more intelligent for entrepreneurs, at least.<\/p>\n

    I\u2019ll add that something like this could only be created by locals because, for large multinationals, something like this would be below their level of visibility.<\/p>\n

Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
