The surgery was \u201ca little bit over two weeks ago\u201d, and I\u2019m still in bed like an idiot, leg up on a pillow, since it\u2019s still a bit swollen. I don\u2019t feel bad, but I really don\u2019t like this bluish foot and its sick and fatty toes.<\/p>\n

Right now, I should be hopping through Istanbul towards Beirut<\/a>, as part of my global tour of innovation and social media.<\/p>\n

I still haven\u2019t started to plan out my next trip, but I\u2019m already trying to figure out where to go at the end of January and beginning of February. Somewhere that\u2019s not too far, because of my fragile Achilles tendon, nor too cold. When it drops below 50\u00b0 F (10\u00b0 C), I\u2019m not happy. Trapped, I\u2019m already dreaming of new travels. This is what makes me lose time or be disorganized, but also what pushes me to keep moving.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever been this zen<\/strong>. I\u2019ve always thought that to travel right, you had to be able to handle any setback. With a smile.<\/p>\n

For example, when I spent the night in a holding cell \u2013 they call it a \u201chotel,\u201d but it has locks on the windows \u2013 in Abidjan\u2019s airport<\/a>,(in French) the only thing I wanted to achieve, while waiting to see if my friends could get me out, was to get right to the next step, Accra. Rather than move backwards, as the logic of customs officers demands. It\u2019s a question of principles. When you travel, you move forward \u2013 that\u2019s the main source of pleasure. Moving backwards quickly starts to taste like failure.<\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t complain. It wouldn\u2019t have accomplished anything, and I couldn\u2019t fault the Ivorians for putting a French man in a holding cell if he didn\u2019t have a visa, as my fellow countrymen have no problem doing the same to them.<\/p>\n

What I\u2019m saying \u2013 keeping calm in face of the inevitable obstacles, in travel or in life \u2013 is in reality only half of the equation. It\u2019s the most important, maybe, but as with all halves, it\u2019s meaningless without the other \u2013 the ability to charge ahead. I learned this with my friend Augustin in 1965, when we were\u00a0travelling\u00a0through India and decided to hitchhike back.<\/p>\n

We worked in shifts \u2013 it helps you last longer. When confrontation was necessary, like when the authorities at the Kuwait border post didn\u2019t want to let us re-enter because we weren\u2019t Arabs, one of us took care of it while the other read in the shadows (in the best of cases). A role-playing game. A time when my nonchalance went a little too far.<\/p>\n

4 a.m. I still remember the the cold-water faucet that I was practically attached to, trying to fight dehydration \u2013 even at night, it\u2019s really hot \u2013 when Augustin pulled me by the shirt, trying to get me to leave as quickly as possible, saying that the hotel was on fire and that all the other guests had already left. \u201cLet me get a drink first,\u201d I said. First things first, right?<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, when we were on the street watching flames shooting through the windows, I had to admit that he really wasn\u2019t wrong for wanting to hurry. At least I stayed calm \u2013 he said it was because of fatigue. And it\u2019s me who started to pushing us the next day. We couldn\u2019t miss our chance, since we were there to take part in one of Kuwait\u2019s big attractions for hippies in that era: they bought blood. For $30, I recall. Which we were counting on to finish our trip and return to Europe. After a long trip: a flight to Mumbai \u2013 which we still called Bombay back then \u2013 and then a train in northern India. A tiny leap over war-torn Pakistan. Kabul, and then bus and every other kind of ground transport to Beirut, where we had taken boat from.<\/p>\n

We had started to learn this calm a few weeks earlier
at the border crossing between Herat and Mashhad, between Iraq and Afghanistan. Stuck there because there weren\u2019t any customs agent on one of the sides (I don\u2019t remember which), we had to spend a few days waiting, with only two half-crazy Brits and inexhaustible reserves of hash, which I discovered during that period. It helps you stay cool.<\/p>\n

Today, without similar recourse, the wait is ten weeks<\/strong>. Interminable, even with the Web. But I\u2019m determined to get back on the road for Winch5. The first two legs of the trip, Mexico and the little bit of Africa that I saw, reinforced what at the start was just an intuition: innovation and change comes from everywhere.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been surprised by the quality and the vitality of everything I\u2019ve discovered. I just need to deepen this search for a better understanding of it and, in order to do so, to search myself for the reasons that\u00a0 made me take on this adventure and gives the tone to what this adventure reveals.<\/p>\n

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
