Yasmine E-Mehairy doesn\u2019t have children yet. No doubt this is\u00a0 the reason that, one day in in the fall of 2010, she was struck by the stresses of her sister-in-law\u2019s pregnancy, by the difficulty in finding useful information, and the impossibility of choosing from the deluge of advice offered by countless mothers.<\/p>\n

\"supermama<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very social<\/strong>,\u201d she told me with a big smile, full of cultural pride. \u201cSocial\u201d in the sense that women there discuss much with each other, tell their stories, share huge and intimate parts of their lives with each other. No reason here to mistrust ITC. This might be a clue to help understand how new medias, Facebook or otherwise, are exploding in usage in societies like Egypt\u2019s.<\/p>\n

This is where the idea for\u00a0SuperMama.me<\/a>\u00a0came from. (The .me is for \u201cMiddle East,\u201d even though the domain is actually from Montenegro \u2013 a lot of Middle Eastern entrepreneurs\u00a0 targeting the region do this.) The site is a discussion space where future mothers can find expert advice\u00a0 and\u00a0 the stories of others\u2019 experiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut much faster and easier,\u201d E-Mehairy said.<\/p>\n

SuperMama hopes to become a community, a place for conversation and sharing as well as a space for accessing relevant experts, from nutritionists to psychologists. The site\u00a0 gives practical info about time and money management, and offers useful tools like a pregnancy calendar, and others for controlling budget and weight. All of this available in Arabic and English.<\/p>\n

E-Mehairy and her colleagues boast of the fact that they introduced the concept of paternity in the site\u2019s \u201cDaddy Darling\u201d space, an attempt to involve fathers in the lives of their children.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething unheard of in the Arab world,\u201d she said with a slightly provocative grin. At the time I interviewed her, the two top articles were about preparing family vacations and the different forms of male contraception. The women are counting on the curiosity of male readers, easily intrigued by a site reserved for women.<\/p>\n

Launched October 1st, the site seems to be gaining traction<\/strong>. \u201cThere are 5 million women online in the age group we\u2019re targeting,\u201d E-Mehairy says. The site offers them a service that didn\u2019t exist before.<\/p>\n

But why create a specifically Egyptian site (especially one with English content) if future Egyptian mothers can already find all the information they need on the web?<\/p>\n

The answer is striking: \u201cWhat all these sites are missing is the local aspect,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0meaning information adapted to a specific national and regional context.<\/p>\n

\u201cEurope gets less sun, so your sites give a lot of advice about correcting Vitamin D deficiency. But an Egyptian woman following that advice would end up taking toxic doses. The climate is different,\u201d she explained to me in the conference hall at\u00a0ArabNet<\/a>, held last October in Cairo.<\/p>\n

Her beauty, presence and personality, the way she wears her hijab, the quality of her work, and the market\u2019s potential all help her attract investor attention. SuperMama has already won two startup competitions, and has received funding from Danish and American investors.<\/p>\n

But is she innovating?<\/strong>\u00a0Definitely, in Egypt, especially regionally. \u201cWe\u2019re the first to gather articles around the subject, to launch a space for discussion, to offer online organization tools, to reward users with badges \u2013 collecting \u201cqueen of the kitchen\u201d or \u201csocial butterfly\u201d badges to become SuperMamas,\u201d E-Mehairy said without hesitation or doubt.<\/p>\n

Making a service local isn\u2019t a new idea. The first to focus on\u00a0 it, or at least say they were focusing on it, were the major multinationals. But there\u2019s no indication that they have any idea how to proceed. Innovation can help with the local aspect, how to talk about something as universal as pregnancy \u2013 and what\u2019s more universal than pregnancy? \u2013 while adapting the dialogue to local conditions.<\/p>\n

Looking at region-specific problems, E-Mehairy stands a good chance of finding the best answers to global questions.<\/p>\n

The overarching question is whether we\u2019re most likely to see innovation as something absolute, or at least something that\u2019s always new and always global, when in reality innovations might always be relative, both in time and space.<\/p>\n

As the head of the company, is E-Mehairy is tempted to use the services her service offers?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in no hurry,\u201d she says with a happy smile. \u201cI\u2019m waiting until I find a superpapa.\u201d<\/p>\n

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
