A native of the Emirates, he enjoys a great freedom of expression and, more importantly, uses it in service of democratic movements. His columns appear in\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Financial Times<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>, and others.<\/p>\n<p>We pass quickly to the inevitable question: the role\u00a0 played by social media in the Middle East insurrections. A generalized anger, the frustration of young people too often condemned to joblessness. \u201cThe uprisings were inevitable,\u201d he said. \u201cThey might have happened later, but they still would have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A privileged witness who was on the ground in the countries involved, and knows activists everywhere, Al-Qassemi adds: \u201cSocial media plays different roles depending on the country. Since they\u2019re tech savvy, people in Cairo naturally use them, but people from the interior of the country took part through word-of-mouth.\u201d In Tunisia, on the other hand, when dictator Ben Ali blocked the internet, elites used their Blackberries, which functioned normally.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudi women\u2019s driving movement ,\u201dwhich was an integral part of the Arab uprisings, worked because women identified police control points with hashtags. This is why only two or three were arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it wasn\u2019t all newcomers. The \u201clongest-running experiment in socia-media usage\u201d is in Bahrain, started by clandestine blogger\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abdulemam.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ali Abdulemem<\/a>\u00a0 in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>In sum: \u201cThe collective desire for change was a determining factor. Social media helped people assemble, share information and, perhaps, comfort each other.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Sultan Al-Qassemi saw firsthand the innovations coming out of last year\u2019s uprisings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first, put in place by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yamli.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yamli.com<\/a>\u2013 which lets users write in Arabic on a Latin keyboard, and search for Arab-language content by adding Latin approximations \u2013 lets people translate messages written in Arabic into several languages, which lets them be broadcast globally.<\/p>\n<p>Created in Egypt by local teams,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/speak2tweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@speak2tweet<\/a>\u00a0changes spoken messages sent by phone into tweets. It was built in less than a week by Google and Twitter engineers, in order to get around Mubarak\u2019s internet blackout.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Qassemi himself found a way to distribute political pamphlets in real-time by taking a photo of them that he then tweeted, allowing his tens-of-thousands of followers to pass them around their own networks.<\/p>\n<p>But the most fascinating thing about this geek-entrepreneur, head of Barjeel Securities ,whose education (including 4 years in Paris) has taught him the secrets of finance \u2013 he never invests in IT companies.<br \/>\u201cAs an investor, I never touch it,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are\u2019t tangible products. Today, Yahoo is dying; tomorrow, it\u2019ll be Google. Someone in China or Vietnam could create something totally game-changing. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
