Not novel enough to justify a tour of the world, except when you look at the advanced metrics. We are in India.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is simple: when you\u2019re sick, it\u2019s hard to find a doctor, and even harder to get an appointment. The obvious geek response: aggregate the data and make it accessible. A little logic (not really AI) lets users find out which doctors practice what, and who accepts which insurance.<\/p>\n<p>And since we\u2019re in a country known for on-phone customer service, a small team provides a personal touch by helping callers \u2013 who can also access the service on the web \u2013 find the doctor or hospital they need. Patients give their personal info when they make an appointment, and can rate the appointment when it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n<p>The service is free for patients \u2013 it charges doctors and hospitals when appointments are fixed.<\/p>\n<p>After Hyderabad, the service launched in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai. In the latter city, I met with the founder and CEO, the 27-year-old Shantanu Jha (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/shantanujha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@shantanujha<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe realized that the phone was the best way when it comes to health, since the human element is essential. We formed a special team to help people find the offices. This, plus the database and the fact that you can make an appointment in real time is a sort of evolution,\u201d Jah says. It\u2019s part of what makes the site unique.<\/p>\n<p>The company already has a staff of 35, and lists more than 5,000 doctors in its database \u2013 with a lot of room to grow, as the four cities combined have more than 80,000 doctors. According to Jah, there are 650,000 in India. But like I said, there\u2019s room to grow.<\/p>\n<p>I ask if he plans on targeting foreign markets. India\u2019s not the only place that needs a service like this. There\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zocdoc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZocDoc<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctoralia.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doctoralia<\/a>\u00a0in Spain, for example.\u00a0 This should prove that there\u2019s a market.<\/p>\n<p>But, Jha says, \u201cI\u2019m not really thinking internationally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is where things get interesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no reason to go anywhere else,\u201d he adds. \u201cOn the other hand, I plan on getting better penetration in the Indian market, which is really complex. It has many languages, and the difference between big and small cities is huge. I\u2019m going to work with NGOs in rural zones, to help them reduce the distance patients need to travel to find a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market here is huge,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are 1.2 billion people in India, who go to the doctor 3 times a year, on average. If I cover 10% of the country \u2013 which I can do just by having a presence in the 10 biggest urban areas \u2013 that\u2019ll give me 360 million visits. 1 million a day. I\u2019ll have work for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shantanu Jah might change his mind \u2013 notably to satisfy his investors \u2013 but his story helped me understand India\u2019s unique position as a market both giant and complex. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
