But one of the reasons for the acquisition of the smartphone photo-sharing app is Facebook\u2019s pending IPO. More importantly, its an apparent confirmation that everything happens in California, and that a global tour of innovation might not be a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram\u2019s founders,\u00a0 Michael Kriegerand Kevin Systrom, are Stanford graduates. Their deal with Facebook shows\u00a0 the region\u2019s advantages: the network of relationships linking people with ideas and people with money. People who have succeeded happily write checks for others who have little chance of success but who, in the rare case of a win, win big.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0explains that, thanks to an introduction done by one of his former Google colleagues, Systrom received a check for $250,000 after a simple pitch to a \u201cfriend of a friend.\u201d This is unthinkable anywhere else, even where there\u2019s money. In this, Silicon Valley\u2019s advantage is not close to disappearing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coincidence and trend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, the key to understanding the logic behind this was provided to me in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I was when the deal happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ideas that people here have are as good as those in California,\u201d says\u00a0 Kal Joffres, director of the Tandem Fund, a Malaysian firm investing in social businesses. \u201cIn the U.S., there are enough early adopters to have an early idea of how people will react to a service or product. That\u2019s not the case here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proof: Instagram gained its first 25,000 users in 24 hours. At the end of 3 weeks, that number had grown to 300,000. When it launched for Android devices, it gained 10 million users in 10 days, reaching 40 million users total. Are Silicon Valley companies the only ones capable of innovation? Ironically, Instagram seems to illustrate the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for example, alternatives to Instagram. The Next Web lists eight. Among them are Pixlr-o-matic (Sweden), Tadaa and EyeEm (German) and Lightbox (U.K.). Further search finds Stepcase (Hongkong) and Pudding.to (Korea).<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the fact that\u00a0 Michael Krieger, Instagram\u2019s co-founder, was born and raised in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil. With a degree in \u201csymbolic systems and computer-human interactions,\u201d he\u2019s a brilliant engineer.<\/p>\n<p>This is a perfect illustration for the title of a recent Washington Post article, \u201cWill the next Mark Zuckerberg be Brazilian?\u201d it\u2019s not a coincidence \u2014 its how things are trending.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is still the market that reacts fastest to a good idea. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
