One day, he saw a cartoon in an American newspaper: in it, a father is saying to his daughter, \u201cNo, you can\u2019t outsource your homework to India.\u201d Krishnan hung the cartoon on his office wall. Eventually, he thought, \u201cWhy not?\u201d And that\u2019s how\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tutorvista.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TutorVista<\/a>\u00a0was born.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Krishnan Indian tutors to the rescue\" height=\"298\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2012\/05\/25\/ob_2c4ce4_krishnan.jpg?resize=303%2C298\" title=\"Krishnan\" width=\"303\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>His interest piqued, Krishnan researched the area, talking to parents and professors in the U.S. and India. He realized there was an enormous opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. has a record number of Nobel Prizes and patents,\u201d Krishnan says in his Bangolore office. \u201cThey have the best universities in the world, but their schools are in crisis. Politicians want to raise the level of education. The professors are good, but there\u2019s something that\u2019s not working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His response: create a distance-tutoring system that matches students (mostly American) with professors (mostly Indian) for help with homework and test prep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe difficulty\u00a0 wasn\u2019t with putting together curriculums, but with teaching methods,\u201d Krishnan says. In Asia, teaching is mainly done through memorization, and in the U.S. it\u2019s done by example.\u201d So you need to train tutors \u2013 today the site has more than 2,000, all certified teachers. They receive 3 weeks (60 hours) of distance training, learning the platform their students will use.<\/p>\n<p>The platform itself is complex, and took two years to develop. \u201cIt has all the university disciplines,\u201d Krishnan says. From the web portal to the appointment system, \u201c50 people work on it full time. If the site shuts down, it\u2019s like a university closing down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students connect when they want, study whatever subject they want. They can either make an appointment with specific tutors (which 60% do) or get instant help from whichever tutors are currently online. There are an average of 20,000 students online at any moment.<\/p>\n<p>TutorVista is not a charity. It\u2019s a \u201cvirtual education company,\u201d Krishnan says. So it needs a good business model. The risk was that, instead of charging by the minute, the company chose a subscription model ($100 a month for unlimited, 24\/7 service). Individualized classes run from $40 to $60 an hour. With this, the company became the largest distance-tutoring company, and led it to launch\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/smarthinking.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SmartThinking<\/a>, offering the same services at the university level.<\/p>\n<p>Krishnan sees online tutoring as an opportunity enabled by globalization and information technologies. His company\u2019s success is aided by India\u2019s strong reputation in math and its large number of English speakers. In 2011, Pearson, the largest education company in the world, acquired 77% of TutorVista. \u201cIt gave them access to the Indian market, which is great for them,\u201d Krishnan says. \u201cAnd the partnership gives me access to the entire globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ganesh Krishnan is the founder of one of India\u2019s first call centers. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
