Entrepreneurship isn\u2019t always about getting rich. Sure, some entrepreneurs are mainly driven by financial gain, but a growing number want their companies to have greater meaning. They can innovate in important ways, beyond the technical aspects. This is the sort of company that\u00a0Tandem Fund<\/a>, located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, wants to help.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe invest in social businesses with a cause \u2013 reducing poverty, for example \u2013 but also have a way to generate revenue,\u201d says Tandem Fund director, Kal Joffres. \u201cTheir mission needs to be social in nature, with a business model tied to the private sector,\u201d he says. \u201cWhether they help people depends on the market.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a bit revolutionary for Malaysia, where philanthropy is often limited to giving money to orphans \u2013 and having yourself photographed doing it \u2013 once a year. Financed by a bank\u2019s charitable foundation, TandemFund is more ambitious. It invests in health, food, lodging and distribution for disadvantaged populations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re happy with a return on investment that\u2019s smaller than a commercial return, what\u2019s called \u2018patient capital,\u2019\u201d Joffres says. The fund uses lesser known models like \u2018risk debt,\u2019 loans for startups\u2019 capital expenses. It also practices the (very Islamic) concept of profit sharing.<\/p>\n

Some of the companies it has funded are\u00a0\u00a0SOLS 24\/7<\/a>, which teaches English to disadvantaged Asian children \u2013 only children from rich countries like Japan need to pay, and\u00a0WeDesignChange<\/a>, a site where designers volunteer to help rural artisans \u201craise the value of their products without raising their production costs.\u201d The fund also helps a company that recycles computers, giving them to social organizations.<\/p>\n

Tandem Fund has also created\u00a0Tandemic<\/a>, a consulting group that helps social enterprises. One of its primary activities is organizing\u00a0Hack Weekends<\/a>, intense sessions where applications are built to solve problems, like creating a carpooling app for people hesitant to ride with strangers.<\/p>\n

MakeWeekends are focused on being an entrepreneur\u2019s first attempt at building out an idea, no matter how elaborate or crazy. \u201cThe weekend keeps people from abandoning their work,\u201d Joffres says. \u201cYoung people come to rapidly prototype whatever idea they have. We don\u2019t worry about business models. People are more likely to go all-out in the prototyping phase.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the government\u2019s help, Tandemic collaborates on Innobridge, a project to familiarize Malaysian students with problems encountered in business. Business cases are put online and students have two weeks to answer them. Innobridge holds competitions and awards monetary prizes for useful replies. The ministry of higher education gives points to the universities where the best answers come from \u2013\u00a0 the winner is awarded by the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

The project is a way to build links with the private sector and encourage entrepreneurship. \u201cIt\u2019s good for companies\u2019 image and helps find future employees,\u201d Joffres says. \u201cIt\u2019s great for the students who realize they can earn money by fixing a real-world problem.
