Nandu Madhava was born in Boston, US, and raised in Texas, where he studied finance. He recently launched\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdhil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mDhil<\/a>, a start-up that provides medical information via SMS, in his parent\u2019s hometown of Bangalore, India.<\/p>\n<p>Vir Kashyap is the Chief Operating Officer of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/babajob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Babajob<\/a>\u00a0a virtual marketplace for day-laborers. Born in Dubai, Kashyap, like Madhava, studied finance. Both are part of a significant trend: children of immigrants moving back to where their parents were raised.<\/p>\n<p>Madhava decided to create mDhil after serving with the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic, where the lack of medical information creates major problems for the population. \u201cI wanted to use technology to make an impact on people\u2019s lives,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>mDhil sends SMS messages to its 200,000 users, who pay 1 rupee (1.5 Euro cents) per day to receive a daily message on a health theme of their choice, for example, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases or women\u2019s health. Its YouTube channel recently passed one million views.<\/p>\n<p>The service\u2019s strategy relies on two trends: the localization of information and the passage to mobile. \u201cThe world of American medical information sites begins in Great Britain and ends in California,\u201d Madhava says. Most of the advice available on the web is no help in India, whether its diet recommendations or telling people to call 911 in the US. \u201cWe produce all of our content,\u201d not adapting the information available on other sites, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Priority is given to mobile communication for the simple reason that India has 100 million Internet users and 900 mil<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Vir Kashyap Bangalore: Indians from Other Countries\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2012\/06\/22\/ob_286599_vir-kashyap.png?resize=298%2C297\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"Vir Kashyap\" width=\"298\">lion SIM cards. One out of 10 videos in the US is viewed on a phone, whereas in India that ratio is four out of 10.<\/p>\n<p>Vir Kashyap\u2019s company, Babajob seems to go even farther in prioritizing mobile, using it to open the job market to employees who only make a few dollars per day, employees who don\u2019t have a resume. The innovation is in an algorithm processing complex information about place of residence, job offers, pay, skills, and languages spoken (more than 20 languages are officially recognized).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge is in offering a service to people who aren\u2019t fully literate, who can only use technology at a basic level, Kashyap says. \u201cSince they don\u2019t spend time on the web, we send them one SMS per day, which requires a huge effort in data coordination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kashyap and Madhava are part of a significant trend: children of immigrants returning to their family\u2019s native country in search of roots and opportunity. In 2010, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/04\/16\/us\/more-us-children-of-immigrants-are-leaving-us.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a>, 100,000 members of this group moved back to India (you can\u2019t really say they \u201creturned,\u201d since they were born in other countries). The brain drain seems to be changing into \u201cbrain circulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The economic crisis that hit northern countries is one reason, but so is the dynamism of Bangalore and Mumbai. \u201cWhen I go back home [to the United States], it feels empty,\u201d Kashyap told the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/content\/69525\/sensory-overload-theyre-lovin-it.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deccan Herald<\/a>, a local publication. \u201cOnce you get used to India, the weather, the people and the constant noise, nothing else seems so exciting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nandu Madhava came \u201cfor the adventure.\u201d He took to the quality of life, notably the fact that he\u2019s able to spend more time with his family than his friends in Boston can. He especially enjoys the opportunity \u201cto build something for hundreds of thousands of people, soon millions. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
