I was recently asked to talk about how innovation has changed journalism, which turned into an experiment in tweeting my own presentation with no visual support besides my Twitter page. This took place at the end of June as part of the 4M Conference (Montpellier, Mediterranean, Media, Mutations) organized by Canal France International.<\/p>\n

It was sort of a high-wire act, because even\u00a0 the morning of the presentation I had no idea how to tweet while giving a speech so that the tweets appeared in real-time. Damian Van Achter (@davanac<\/a>) showed me what to do at breakfast: switch to the Twitter for Mac app (I usually use Hootsuite). It lets you prepare tweets that then stay on-screen until you want to send them.<\/p>\n

The first exercise: turn my presentation into 29 tweets of about 120 characters, so they could be easily retweeted. It really was a good way of synthesizing my presentation. Twenty-nine tweets seemed like the maximum you\u2019d for a 25 minute presentation. (Nicolas Loubet\u2019s version on Storify \u2013 in French).<\/p>\n

My tweets were my presentation. They were projected on the wall behind me by Simon Decreuze (@cuisineanxious<\/a>) of\u00a0l\u2019Atelier des m\u00e9dias<\/a>\u00a0(RFI).<\/p>\n

The New York Times\u2019 Amy O\u2019Leary did something similar in Boston a month before me. But it was slightly different: she gave her tweets to her friends before the event, and they were the ones tweeting them as she spoke.<\/p>\n

Two days after I spoke at Columbia\u2019s Fundaci\u00f3n Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano de Cartag\u00e8ne \u2013 where I sometimes run workshops \u2013\u00a0 it posted a series called \u201cJournalism in 15 tweets\u201d (in Spanish) which was created by my El Pa\u00eds colleague, Miguel-Angel Bastenier. It\u2019s a series of well-turned aphorisms, all of them between 137 and 140 characters, which make them difficult to retweet.<\/p>\n

I found tools to tweet presentations in KeyNote and PowerPoint. These tools go back to 2009, but I haven\u2019t seen any examples of any presentation that was exclusively in tweet form. If anyone could point out where it\u2019s been done, that\u2019d be great!<\/p>\n

Is it worth it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the negative side, tweeting tripped me up several times. My friend Eric Scherer (@ericscherer<\/a>) said he was sorry it happened happened, but stumbling is unavoidable in an experiment.\u00a0 What I get from his response is that I should keep trying this, and make it better.<\/p>\n

I want to clarify the second point : it\u2019s not a question of \u201ccontrol.\u201d Everyone was free to do what they wished. I wanted to augment my presentation with a tweeted information feed, a substantially different approach.<\/p>\n

As far as people paying attention \u2013 a lot of that came from the surprise factor. Which doesn\u2019t last. And I\u2019ll be the first to admit that this was gimmicky. Maybe we\u2019ll start seeing more tweet presentations \u2013 at first, the audience will be interested, but it\u2019ll be done so much people will get tired of it.<\/p>\n

You need good content, but you can\u2019t ignore the format. And the format is easier to change.<\/p>\n

My first published criticism of PowerPoint presentations was run by\u00a0 El Pa\u00eds in 1999. Since then, we\u2019ve moved towards less text and more images, which are often amusing but not always meaningful. We\u2019ve moved towards storytelling, which is a good thing for speakers. I\u2019ve tried MindMap presentations \u2013 concept maps \u2013 using\u00a0 TheBrain. The big trick, the risky trick, is creating the map as you\u2019re speaking, so the audience can watch your thoughts develop while retaining a good overview. And thus was born the tweet presentation.<\/p>\n

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. Mes articles et chroniques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9s par plus de 100 m\u00e9dias sur quatre continents dont Le Monde, El Pa\u00eds (Madrid), Reforma (Mexico), The Next Web (Amsterdam) et Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo (Br\u00e9sil). J'enseigne aussi \u00e0 la Paris School of International Affairs de l'Institut d'\u00c9tudes Politiques de Paris et \u00e0 la WebSchoolFactory. J\u2019ai donn\u00e9 des cours \u00e0 l'Universit\u00e9 de Berkeley et \u00e0 l'Universit\u00e9 de Stanford. Je participe en temps qu\u2019expert au r\u00e9seau Netexplo. J\u2019ai publi\u00e9 plusieurs livres dont Comment le web change le monde, l'alchimie des multitudes (Pearson) avec Dominique Piotet (2008 et 2011). De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
