Before you head off on vacation, let me take a moment to set out my preliminary \u2013 and only partial\u00a0 \u2013 takeaways from my travels through the world of innovation, a journey that will conclude in October. After visiting 33 cities, interviewing more than 200 people and researching the subject in books and articles, I\u2019d have to say that the key to innovation is the ecosystem: a complex play of\u00a0 technological creations and human connections, which profit from the widest diversity.<\/p>\n

Innovations are always the result of combining already- existing elements in such a way that they create \u201cobjectively new or improved\u201d products, processes or services,\u00a0according to OCDE<\/a>. Such is the case with\u00a0NandiMobile.com<\/a>, the Ghanaian company that joins short message service (SMS) and artificial intelligence to create a customer-relations service adapted to African realities.<\/p>\n

Steven Johnson\u2019s book,\u00a0Where Good Ideas Come From<\/em>, explains that ideas are always the\u00a0 fruit of slow-moving processes, and are thus linked to\u00a0 the notion of creation and diversity. The necessary elements have been there for a long time, but innovation occurs the day someone figures out how to use them in a new way.<\/p>\n

Such combinations depend on people with different backgrounds but the same entrepreneurial spirit, the decision to assemble resources one does not (yet) control, in order to bring an idea into being. An idea that begins as a dream.\u00a0 It\u2019s up to the individual whether their goal is to make money (traditional entrepreneurs), create a socially responsible business (social entrepreneurs), or to mobilize people to change their world (activist entrepreneurs).<\/p>\n

There is a need, therefore, for people to meet and exchange ideas, to share projects and to consider collaboration. I found these places in mall cafes in Kuala Lumpur (which all offer WiFi access), in places dedicated to \u201cpollinating new ideas,\u201d like Dakar\u2019s JokkoLabs, and conferences like\u00a0\u00a0Arabnet.me<\/a>, held throughout the Arab world.<\/p>\n

The only thing left is finding investors who finance these risky ventures. The phrase I heard most often in my visits is, \u201cThere\u2019s money here, but the people who have it don\u2019t invest in virtual things or ventures they don\u2019t think are sure-bets.\u201d This represents a real roadblock.<\/p>\n

To get beyond that roadblock, an ecosystem needs an example of enormous success, which strengthens the belief that you can succeed with an idea. This is what happened in Tel Aviv,\u00a0 when AOL acquired ICQ in 1998, and in Mumbai when Disney bought IndiaGames in 2011.<\/p>\n

Everywhere I go I meet people willing to gamble on innovation as a part of development, a way to get rich, or change the world. But this takes time, for the simple reason that ecosystems are by definition complex and alive. Even if governments and legislation play a decisive role in creating conditions that aid its emergence, they cannot create the ecosystem. That\u2019s \u201cour\u201d role.<\/p>\n

These are some preliminary thoughts, but I haven\u2019t finished my journey yet. I still have a trip to Eastern Europe (Belgrade, Warsaw, Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Berlin \u2013 this runs until July 15), and my second trip across the globe, which will last from August 20 to September 30. This trip will include Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Manilla, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo and San Francisco. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
