Who hasn\u2019t dreamed of TED conferences for the poor, for activists, for people who want to change the world but don\u2019t have the means to travel to Long Beach in California, US, or the connections needed to participate in global TEDx conferences?. Something like this exists in Serbia:\u00a0SHARE conferences<\/a>. The first two took place in Belgrade, and the third will be held in Beirut, Lebanon, this December.<\/p>\n

For 48 hours, the 2,000 attendees discuss everything important to social activists: from the importance of free speech with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, protecting yourself from censorship, the best ways to encrypt messages \u2013 there\u2019s even a workshop to teach kids how to keep their secrets safe from parents \u2013 and music sharing with Peter Sunde, co-founder of the BitTorrent search engine,\u00a0The Pirate Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a serious event that doesn\u2019t forget the entertainment aspect \u2013 that\u2019s the \u201cE\u201din TED. How could they? SHARE spun out of\u00a0EXIT<\/a>, one of the largest music festivals in Europe, which has been held since 2000 in Novi Sad, north of Belgrade. Vladan Joler (@TheCreaturesLab<\/a>), SHARE\u2019s founder, was EXIT\u2019s creative director.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a world birthed from student opposition to Slobodan Milosevic, the former President of Serbia, created by people who used new forms of peaceful protest filled with humor and an art savvy in using media and communication, and whose influence we see in some of the Egyptian and Tunisian revolutionaries, as well as Spanish protesters.<\/p>\n

The first EXIT festival lasted three months: a hundred days of street music leading up to the\u00a0 elections. I met with Joler accompanied by the Huffington Posts\u2019\u00a0Marc Botte<\/a>, who helps manage my web content. The idea for EXIT, Joler says, was to \u201chave a party and then transform it into civil disobedience \u2013 a strange way to motivate young people and drive them to protest. And it was the only place where youth from Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia and other former Yugoslavian countries could meet each other after the war.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event was a huge success, but it didn\u2019t satisfy its creators. \u201cIt became sort of an industry of culture,\u201d Joler says. \u201cWe thought its size prevented it from addressing certain problems. We also noticed a classic non-governmental organization (NGO) problem: old-school ones become a sort of industry where the goal is just to make donors happy. We wanted to turn towards new forms of activism, towards the desire for grassroots rebellion that all young people have.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group decided to create a festival for social activists. They chose to hold it in April because in Belgrade that\u2019s the best month for a party.<\/p>\n

They were starting at zero, so the first thing they did was reach out to everyone they knew and ask for help. \u201cWhy not?\u201d most said. To launch the idea they all tweeted the word \u201cSHARE\u201d at the same time so it would trend. The rest was up to the passion and organization of 400 people. The innovation is that everything \u2013 organization, marketing, communications \u2013 was peer to peer (P2P). \u201cWe even crowdsourced the logo and posters,\u201d says\u00a0 Filip Milosevic (no relation), one of the event\u2019s creators.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no idea what it would look like,\u201d Milosevic says. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to get young people interested in things like sustainable development.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of SHARE\u2019s secrets seems to be the fact that it has as many events at night as it does during the day. And by that I mean parties. You talk all day and dance all night.\u00a0 Even during the day, the energy carries over into the question and answer (Q&A) sessions and dynamic dialogues.<\/p>\n

More than 2,000 people attended the events for free. There\u2019s no easy answer to financing: \u201cThe more you ask for money, the more you depend on someone else,\u201d Joler says. They take care to maintain a balance between foundations, governments and sponsors, but also know that the best way to stay independent is to sell tickets. But they didn\u2019t want to do this, so they DIY\u2019d [DIY means Do It Yourself] it: \u201cIt\u2019s important that people understand how complex organizing something like this is,\u201d Joler and Milosevic say. \u201cNext year we\u2019re going to publish all the costs involved. We\u2019ll try to crowdfund it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It feels weird to write about an event like this without having gone to it, but Joler and Milosevic\u2019s enthusiasm is contagious. So, October in Beirut\u2026 why not?<\/p>\n

The science -fiction writer Bruce Sterling, who is also an astute analyst of IT\u2019s impact on our world, summed up that impact in two things he said in Belgrade (and that you can see in this\u00a0fantastic video<\/a>). First, a simple fact: \u201cThere are more mobile phones in the world than there are people who own toothbrushes.\u201d The other comment tells a bigger story: \u201cIt\u2019s an industry for young people; it\u2019s an industry for the poor. It empowers the young and the poor, and it\u2019s because of this that our decade looks so different than any other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The question \u2013 raised by an off-screen voice in the video \u2013 is \u201chow we achieve the social change we want?.\u201d Sam Graham-Felsen, the former blogger-in-chief of Barack Obama\u2019s presidential campaign, sums up SHARE\u2019s response: \u201cI don\u2019t want a revolution if I can\u2019t dance. […] If everyone is serious you wear yourselves out, you burn\u00a0 out and don\u2019t create change. Change should be fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
