The big trip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"pisani ho chi min Reprisal: The Journey East, Returning to My Roots\" height=\"279\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2012\/09\/03\/ob_4eb5d1_pisani-ho-chi-min.png?resize=497%2C279\" title=\"pisani ho chi min\" width=\"497\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is also also where I became a journalist, entirely by accident.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was 1968; I was teaching French in Tokyo. I figured I should take advantage of being in Asia to get a real idea of what was happening in Vietnam, the war that marked my generation. I thought it was simple curiosity, but it was the beginning of a theme that would guide my life.<\/p>\n<p>I got there a few days before the beginning of the Tet Offensive, the war\u2019s turning point. The day before I had met with\u00a0 Fran\u00e7ois Pelou, bureau director at the Agence France-Presse, and he told me everything he\u2019d seen. The next night I was awakened by B-52 bombings \u2013 which literally shook the earth \u2013 and by automatic-rifle fire; I called the agency where Pelou was, of course, hard at work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Vietcong are attacking throughout the country,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Americans are having a hard time containing them. The airport is closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of staying stuck in my\u00a0 hotel room, I offered my services. Pelou didn\u2019t have anyone in Saigon so he told me to meet him there. My first report was the attack on the presidential palace. It was also the first time I\u2019ve been shot at. An excellent way to start a journalistic career.<\/p>\n<p>I realized tonight that it\u2019s the same thing that drives me from question to question, which drives this tour of the world and right now is taking me back to my roots. After spending 15 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, I started to wonder if innovation was about to start coming places outside of Silicon Valley. Without a real response to that question, I decided to go see for myself. That\u2019s the theme: investigate something that seems crucial. Then report on it.<\/p>\n<p>After visiting Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and India in the last year, I\u2019m heading to the most dynamic area: Singapore, China, Seoul, Tokyo, San Francisco and New York.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moment of truth?<\/strong>\u00a0This trip will give me an idea of how well-founded my hypothesis is, that innovation will soon be \u201cdistributed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that we\u2019ve seen in the last few months that innovation is happening everywhere, but it takes time to develop, and there\u2019s no denying that Silicon Valley still plays a central role, is the place where the most audacious futures are conceived. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
