Since the labor there is cheaper than developed nations, companies line up to manufacture and sell there. But this is changing, and the implications for information technologies are complex and, perhaps, surprising.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"pisani china 1 The Impact of Chinas Population on the Future of IT\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.over-blog-kiwi.com\/0\/73\/87\/12\/2012\/09\/30\/ob_64cb23_pisani-china-1.jpg?resize=498%2C349\" title=\"pisani china 1\" width=\"498\"><\/p>\n<p>The size of the market won\u2019t change \u2013 it\u2019s getting bigger. This is due to the fact that hundreds of millions of Chinese have ascended into middle class status and a \u2013 much smaller \u2013 group of luxury consumers has also emerged.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of labor, on the other hand, is on the rise partly because of the above reasons. Nowadays, it\u2019s cheaper for companies to do their manufacturing in places like Vietnam, or, increasingly, Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, despite China\u2019s big advantage of the number of engineers it graduates every year, an American executive in Shanghai told me their quality is \u201cchallenging\u201d. In order words, the quality varies. There are great engineers, but the executive has a hard time finding hires with sufficient professional experience, which means they\u2019re training employees for longer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the size of China\u2019s population is still significant for at least two other reasons<\/strong>: the first is something that was first only reserved to the US market; a large enough\u00a0<strong>number of early adopters<\/strong>\u00a0to quickly gauge consumer interest in new products and services. It\u2019s an advantage that smaller countries lack, even if they do have enough engineers, entrepreneurs and designers.<\/p>\n<p>The second reason is more complicated, and its possible returns are hard to predict. But they could be huge. It involves innovation.<\/p>\n<p>During my travels, I\u2019ve seen how important it is to have access to global information and global collaboration; to collaborate with strangers on the other side of the world. English, which serves as lingua franca, isn\u2019t spoken well everywhere, and geographic and cultural differences might not prohibit collaboration, but definitely limits it.<\/p>\n<p>So in China, the government, regions, townships, businesses, institutions \u2013 groups of all sizes \u2013 as well as a \u201cChinese\u201d number of individuals (unknowable, but considerable) have decided to\u00a0<strong>make innovation a priority<\/strong>. Their motives can be economic, strategic, political, or personal. The reasons vary, but the push is there. Beijing\u2019s slogan, for example, is \u201cPatriotism, Innovation, Inclusion and Virtue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>No one knows what is possible<\/strong>\u00a0when<br \/>A significant number of people belonging to a group of hundreds of millions of people<br \/>All speaking the same language<br \/>Living in the same country and connected through the same networks<br \/>Decide to innovate, to exchange ideas and creations they either invent or are able to build.<\/p>\n<p>The future of information technologies (and many other things as well) depends on this.<\/p>\n<p>If you have anything to add to this discussion, please don\u2019t hesitate to share.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 1,300,000,000 population of the Chinese nation is seen by foreigners as an enormous potential market. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
