\"wangSocial entrepreneurship helps Chinese citizens fight social problems without resorting to politics. Perhaps we can learn something from them.<\/p>\n

In my last post<\/a>, I profiled Isaac Mao, who is building a platform to bring his IT and business skills to the service of social activists.<\/p>\n

We-Impact<\/a>\u00a0approaches things from a different angle. The Shanghai-based company offers organizations a framework for reflection and action, teaching them that it is possible to generate revenue through sustainable development.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur parents\u2019 generation started the development process. Our generation needs to create social responsibility,\u201d says Ann Wang, We-Impact\u2019s co-founder. She realized this in 2009, while in Copenhagen attending a climate-change conference. Up to that point, she had worked in luxury industries and concierge services for the ultra-wealthy.<\/p>\n

When she returned from the conference, she started to work with a British associate and Simon Kubski, a Canadian who has lived in China for five years and speaks the language fluently.\u00a0 Their goal wasn\u2019t to oppose industrialization, but to take a more social approach to it, trying to change people and organizations\u2019 lifestyles, since that is where \u201chuman values and action\u201d meet, Kubski says.<\/p>\n

Wang and Kubski call themselves \u201cengagement specialists\u201d who create a sense of participation among the groups they work with, notably in convention and conference sessions. They\u2019ve hosted everything from Shanghai Fashion Week\u2019s closing ceremonies to music festivals. But they also help companies \u2013 from a pizza place to the local Lexus branch \u2013 reexamine their values.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t necessarily provide a solution,\u201d Wang says. \u201cBut the framework we give helps them get there. It\u2019s important, especially in this area, that founders and leaders come to their own conclusions, reexamining their own values and figuring out how to translate them to the product or service level.\u201d<\/p>\n

They did this with Sophia Pan, of\u00a0P1.cn<\/a>, a successful social network built around luxury brands. Working with We-Impact, the company is in the process of changing \u201cinto a platform where people can share their real lives with their real friends,\u201d Pan says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re driven more by values than by commerce,\u201d Pan says, adding that she hopes to provide exclusive contributions. By doing this she risks losing, and assumes she will lose, half of her network\u2019s members. That\u2019s the gamble, trying to do this while maintaining positive revenue: Pan hopes she will bring together the real leaders in China\u2019s young generation, a generation she describes as \u201cvery surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several things contribute to this movement\u2019s emergence<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, it\u2019s important to recognize that there is a notion of trendiness in things like this, as I learned from social activist Ye Yin. Things happen after people start talking about them.<\/p>\n

A few people have told me about the importance of \u201cvalues,\u201d which they believe were lost during China\u2019s development, as a way of forgetting 1989\u2032s suppressed protests. They\u2019re conscious of the potential for further widening of social and geographic inequalities, and that they can\u2019t wait for the government to act on this.<\/p>\n

Instead, they took matters into their own hands, trying to change society without doing politics \u2013 something that\u2019s important to many young Chinese.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s even more interesting that these young people want to be \u201ccivic-minded,\u201d to use a word used to describe them by Yin Yang, another social entrepreneur. Maybe they\u2019re helping start a renaissance in active civil society?<\/p>\n

Can we learn from this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are definitely lessons here for people who think that democratic nations are experiencing a crisis in traditional politics right now.<\/p>\n

This sort of action isn\u2019t a way of eluding a dictatorship\u2019s restraints, but a way of helping solve problems that the political class is incapable of addressing.<\/p>\n

This is no doubt why social entrepreneurship \u2013 the pursuit of social objectives by a company that must also keep its revenue in mind \u2013 is becoming attractive to a growing number of young people around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. J'enseigne aussi \u00e0 la Paris School of International Affairs de l'Institut d'\u00c9tudes Politiques de Paris et \u00e0 la WebSchoolFactory. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
