After living for 15 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I covered information technologies for several European and Latin American media outlets, I decided to leave and search for the future elsewhere. And I would like you to accompany me on this adventure.<\/p>\n

Five years from now (a little bit more or slightly less, who knows?) innovation will be coming from other places, from countries that we know little about or understand poorly: from Kenya to China, Brazil to Indonesia, Poland to Korea, to name a few.\u00a0In this, I\u2019m opposed to\u00a0Robert Scoble<\/a>, often considered the pope of social media, who believes that it all begins and ends with Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n

Thomas Friedman<\/a>, the New York Times\u2019 star columnist, believes that \u201cthe world is flat\u201d and homogenized by technology. This seems almost dangerous. Even if we look the same when using Word or reading a PDF, we all differ in the way we use Facebook. And what about our mobile phones, the quintessential object we invest in, that becomes a part of our identity \u2013 and with it, our culture and our daily problems?<\/p>\n

As they are continually modified through usage, we know technologies to evolve as they attain more users, and when they confront different cultures and social situations. Innovations in education, organizational forms or even waste management should vary depending on whether they occur in Dakar, Mumbai or Barcelona.<\/p>\n

But I have no proof.<\/p>\n

This is why I\u2019ve decided to go into the field \u2013 the many fields \u2013 and see for myself. It requires a lot of travelling. I started in September of last year in Mexico (where I lived previously for 15 years) and will end this July in California (where I learned the initial role of technology).\u00a0Stories written for this project \u2013 that I call Winch5 (for Wave of Innovation and Change on 5 continents) \u2013 will be published by The Next Web on a weekly basis, as I go. But we will start with some catch-up with reporting from Africa for a month.<\/p>\n

\"FPisani<\/p>\n

At the age 69, I don\u2019t feel like travelling endlessly for a whole year and have decided to go about my voyage in loops. The next journey (starting at the end of this month) will take me to the Middle East. It will be followed by a world tour of the South: Sao Paulo, Santiago, Sydney, Jakarta, Singapore, Mumbai and Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

I then plan to investigate what goes on in the eastern part of Europe: Belgrade, Istanbul, Warsaw, Saint Petersburg, Tallinn, and Stockholm. I will complete the travelling with a second World tour, this time of the North: Moscow, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo and finish in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

Suggestions and advice are most welcome. I am looking for change agents who use information technologies and in particular social media, as well as the people creating digital technologies that so much of our future depends on.<\/p>\n

As they continue to fall in cost, new technologies will soon be available to (almost) everyone in the world. For example, there are already 6 billion mobile-phone owners in the world. Mobile smartphones act as the intelligence mechanism for all other technologies; as the nervous system for interpersonal communication networks between objects and the data they collect and share.\u00a0They contribute to the ruptures in social relations and to traditional forms of organization. Stay tuned for their impact on the globally connected world we will live in.<\/p>\n

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion. De retour en Europe (2010), j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un tour du monde de l\u2019innovation, le projet Winch 5 -- 45 villes, 32 pays entre septembre 2011 et octobre 2012 - enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tude des conditions \u00e9conomiques, financi\u00e8res, culturelles et sociales du d\u00e9veloppement de l'innovation. J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles. Je donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement conf\u00e9rences et s\u00e9minaires sur ce sujet dans certaines entreprises fran\u00e7aises de poids : Bouygues Telecom, CapGemini, L'Or\u00e9al, SFR, SNCF, entre autres ainsi que dans des forums moins prestigieux mais dans lesquels l\u2019assistance est passionn\u00e9e Convaincu que l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de nos villes et de la d\u00e9mocratie locale est un enjeu technologique et social majeur, je viens de me lancer dans une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d\u2019enqu\u00eates \u2013 un tour du monde en plusieurs \u00e9tapes nomm\u00e9 Participolis - sur les villes intelligentes ou qui s\u2019efforcent de l\u2019\u00eatre : 20 villes entre janvier 2014 et avril 2015. Je le con\u00e7ois comme une tension constante entre deux p\u00f4les d\u2019un m\u00eame probl\u00e8me : CitySmarting ou l\u2019effort pour rendre les villes plus intelligentes gr\u00e2ce, notamment aux technologies de l\u2019information et Participolis, le fait qu\u2019un meilleur futur pour nos villes ne peut \u00e9merger que de notre participation \u00e0 leur conception et \u00e0 leur gestion.
