When I arrived from Mexico and war-torn Central America to cover Silicon Valley I was impressed, and more than slightlyskeptical, to find millionaires with some kind of social bent. Money, ofcourse, matters more than revolution around here, but it is not always thewhole picture. This is not easy to understand for a foreigner (and much less toexplain as a correspondent is supposed to do). <\/p>\n

That maybe why Ienjoyed so much reading John Markoff\u2019s What the Dormouse said, How the 60\u2019scounterculture shaped the Personal Computer Industry (Viking).<\/p>\n

An easy read, the booktraces small and meaningful moments in the life of some of the key actors ofthe PC revolution. This includes the first Stewart Brand\u2019s LSD trip as well asDoug Englebart Brooks Hall Auditorium conference on December 9th<\/sup>1968. \u201cIn many wasy it is still the most remarkable computer-technologydemonstration of all time\u201d writes Markoff.<\/p>\n

What the Dormouse saidweaves the networks of interactions between peace activists who wanted tochange the world through protest, hippies who sought to augment the human mindthrough LSD, and engineers. <\/p>\n

It sheds a fascinatinglight on at least two of the key confrontations that matter so much today:<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0<\/span><\/span>People whowant computers to substitute humans vs. those who want them to augment thehuman mind as in Artificial Intelligence vs. Engelbart\u2019s \u201cAugmentationFramework.\u201d<\/p>\n

I liked Markoff\u2019s bookbecause it gives historic legitimacy to those who advocate a more democratic,and open use of IT.<\/p>\n

J\u2019en a rapport\u00e9 des enseignements sur les meilleures fa\u00e7ons de la rendre possible, de l'encourager, de pr\u00e9parer individus, entreprises et nations \u00e0 participer ainsi \u00e0 la construction de leur propre futur. Une aventure fascinante qui m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des gens audacieux, dot\u00e9s d\u2019une grande intelligence ou d\u2019un grand c\u0153ur. Parfois les deux ensembles.
